Richard Mille is fuelled by friendship and passion, especially of the automobile and horological kinds. When one is at the wheel and the other a co-driver, pole position leads to a podium finish. In tribute to his friend Jean Todt who was celebrating 50 years in motorsports at the glamorous Chantilly Art & Élégance car event sponsored by Richard Mille, the latter developed three limited series in his favorite color.
While the RM 056 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary was issued in a limited edition of just three timepieces featuring a sapphire case, and only five of the eponymous 050 have been made, the RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary Flyback Chronograph thankfully comes in a run of 150.
This eminently high-tech, sporty model with its flyback chronograph activated by generous pushers reminiscent of racing car pedals, stands out by the azure blue shade of the material coating its case. Skilfully mastered by Why Richard Mille Watches So Expensive Replica for several years, and notably in its chromatic variations, Quartz TPT®coated with blue resin forms a bodywork worthy of F1 motor-racing technology : 600 layers of 45 micron-thick silica endow the case with resistance inversely proportional to its weight. All of which prompted the President of the Fédération International de l’Automobile to state : “I love watches designed by Richard. I love their lightness, their technicity and their exclusivity.”
Over the past couple of months when I had the RM033 about, event invites and travel schedules worked out in a way that I was on the road a great deal and thus meeting lots of new people — largely journalists working from the opinion or fashion industry, but also watch business insiders. On these occasions, once everyone is beyond the “How was your flight?” Round of petty small talk, things come to either complimenting the easily identified iconic view of the individual sitting nearby, or, if it seems interesting in any way, the ever-green silence-breaker question arises: “So, What Watch Are You Wearing? Back in Hong Kong I had been greeted twice with “Ooh, you are wearing an expensive watch!” Being shouted at me — and in other, even more discreet configurations, nevertheless everyone with anything related to the watch industry understood more or less what the watch has been. The Richard Mille RM033 is a very different story.Soon after starting his brand from the early 2000s, Richard Mille understood and with good discipline followed closely (not-so-)secret recipe to luxury watch brand achievement: be bold and immediately recognizable. I mean, just look at any one of the most prosperous luxury watches ever made. Just take the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak as a most fitting instance: the Royal Oak was dumb expensive in 1972, but had an exterior unique enough that rich individuals consciously or subconsciously began (and very much continue) to gravitate towards it since they know or at least feel how the Royal Oak, like no other watch in the time and still few now, exhibits excess wealth.
