Much like the aeronautics and automotive industries, where R&D play an essential role, cycling is constantly evolving from a technical perspective. The collaboration between Richard Mille and Alain Prost, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion and co-founder of the Renault e.dams team, and their interest in cycling, gave birth to the all new RM70-01 calibre Tourbillon, featuring an unprecedented odometer.

The RM 70-01’s never-before-seen totaliser allows the cyclist to know how many kilometres they’d ridden since the beginning of the season. The pusher at 2 o’clock can select any of the 5 rollers of the odometer, whose readout is visible in a titanium window. Once a roller selected, pressing the pusher located at 10 o’clock advances the roller by one. The only effort required of the user is to add the day’s distance to the prior total.

The mechanism itself, however, is much more complicated. The first pusher activates selection of a roller, one of the five. Execution is confirmed by perfect alignment of the two yellow arrows. The second pusher incrementally rotates the roller, which automatically blocks, thanks to the carry mechanism. To avoid accidental manipulations, the complication has been fitted with a neutral position (N). Thanks to a spring-lock, the selection fork will be lined up straight, with an arrow at 2 o’clock pointing to N as visual confirmation that the mechanism is locked.

The RM70-01 manual winding tourbillon calibre offers a 70-hour power-reserve, visible at 5 o’clock, thanks to an indicator powered by a planetary differential. Its baseplate and bridges are made of grade 5 titanium. Titanium’s extreme stiffness enables the calibre to withstand the roughest of trails with ease. Nods to the realm of cycling abound, from the titanium Allen screws that fix the bridges, to the barrel ratchet, which recalls the design of forged wheel spokes, to say nothing of the tourbillon cage and dynamometric crown, evocative of a bicycle’s pedal.

On the flip side, the Richard Mille RM 67-02 High Jump, made for Mutaz Essa Barshim, is adorned with the colours of the Qatari flag and features a deep crimson case with white bands.Powering the two watches is your caliber CRMA7, a skeletonized self-winding movement that’s made largely out of titanium. The rotor is made from Carbon TPT to decrease weight, but the endings are made out of white gold to ensure twisting efficiency. The movement has an extremely specialized and somewhat industrial look, but it’s really very highly completed with micro-blasted countertops and anglage, gray and black electro-plasma remedy for the baseplate and bridges, circular finishing on both wheels, and much more as is to be expected from Richard Mille.
The beautifully finished movement possesses tremendous depth. Both its vertical architecture—which lines up the barrel and tourbillon along a single axis—and its compact size were essential because of how much space the odometer occupies within the case.

Machined out of Carbon TPT®, the tripartite case is water-resistant to 50 metres thanks to two Nitrile O-ring seals. It is assembled with 20 spline screws in grade
5 titanium and abrasion-resistant washers in 316L stainless steel. Combining tonneau, rectangular and asymmetrical shapes, the case ensures the greatest possible comfort when worn on the right wrist, but also optimises legibility of the time when gripping a cycle’s handlebars.

At Richard Mille’s suggestion, Alexis Pinturault met with us at the end of the season at the family hotel created by his grandfather, the Anapurna, now managed by his father and sister. The Courchevel 1850 five-star establishment is the highest in the resort, situated on the ski runs and offering a breathtaking view over the playground of the local high-flyers whose posters stud the resort. In addition, he would greatly like to see the poshest resort in the French Alps diversify its offer: “Courchevel has a good image because its authorities target excellence, but as a result all the hotels are of the same top-end level, while the restaurants are geared to the elite, and what is really needed are establishments that would allow it to widen the scope of its potential client base.
•    His three favourite runs at Courchevel: the nice and sunny Marmottes when it’s nice and sunny and it’s well-groomed; the Comble de la Saulire which is north facing with exceptional snow; and the slalom stadium because “I’ve spent days, weeks and years training there, so it goes without saying that I am attached to it.”
•    Off-piste runs at Courchevel: “between the trees there are loads here that are fantastic, especially when you come down from Courchevel 1850 to Praz at 1,300 metres when there is enough snow, but also many passages all around whose names I have forgotten. The same goes for the area above Méribel.”
•    His favourite downhills on the circuit: “If I had to name a discipline, it would be: for slalom, Schladming in the Austrian cauldron with 60,000 people awaiting you at the finish; for giant, Adelboden (Switzerland) because it is the most complete with a wall at the finish with a more than 40° drop which is really very, very steep at the end; and for Super G, it would be Beaver Creek (USA), a magnificent, highly technical, very fast Super G.”
•    His favourite bar in Courchevel: “It has changed its name but I think it is called the Fun House now, and is on the first floor at the Forum in a corner: I love its friendly atmosphere and great music which doesn’t prevent one from talking”.
